Positive Outlook

I have been working at State of Iowa full-time (More than a year)

Pros

People! Partnership attitudes. Ability to work across business lines,

Cons

Government silos and some turf battles, but better. Culture is union-based and tends not to listen to management as much as needed at times. Legislature sometimes is more political than practical on funding and programs for citizens - generally don' follow the requirements of operating services too closely.

Advice to Management

Lead by example and work with your peers first! That sets the eample for the rest of us to better work together.
Drop the "budget" and "headcount" as indicators of your success. Those are meaningless, what matters is what we provide to the citizens.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at State of Iowa full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are amazing, I work in the benefits area and we have some of the best healthcare around. You get a raise every year on your anniversary, plus usually a cost of living increase when the union covered employees do. Once you're here for 6 months and pass your probationary period, it's a pretty stable job with few threats of losing your job.

    Cons

With government when a new administration comes in, everything changes. Expect to go where the wind is blowing for those 4 years. New administrations bring in new directors who may not understand how your area functions and they make decisions based on their private sector experience which doesn't always translate to the public sector.

    Advice to Management

Walk a day in our shoes to see how your polices affect our jobs and the people of Iowa. Cutting corners to save some money isn't always the best way to do business.
