I worked at Stream Global Services full-time (More than a year)

Pros

They will hire anyone - pay is better than minimum wage - you can meet some good people - HR department actually cares - the better supervisors work hard to act as a buffer between the agents and the general buffoonery that is upper management.

Cons

Infighting between underpaid, exhausted team leaders, rigid attendance policy, clueless middle management, nepotism is company policy.

In my time at stream, I was passed over for promotion twice. Typically I would understand such a thing, they have a large pool of applicants, and some very qualified people waiting for promotion. I was told by HR that I would be on the short list for promotion after not being hired on as a supervisor, (They had already hired all of the managers they needed) as I had over 10 years of supervisory experience in the industry.

In both cases, I was eschewed by someone VASTLY less qualified. The only explanation I was afforded is that both of these people already knew someone in management.

Advice to Management

Promote based on aptitude and merit. Provide better insurance against burnout.

    Pros

If you're an entry level candidate in the purest of forms then this is an opportunity to be paid at that rate and build a resume. Casual environment along with some unique benefits at the call center. New ethos to be built which gives the potential for the management to create their own personal culture.

    Cons

Entirely dishonest recruiters to mislead on the potential of earnings, work schedule and training schedule. Will guarantee a set work schedule following training and the first day you'll learn no such guarantee exist. Oversold the commission system when it reality it does less than half of what was claimed. Company will not pay for experience or talent; the position is only for the most entry level candidates and will pay well below the market rate per hour and commissions. Benefits for a call center environment are below industry average with a lack of tuition reimbursement and a anemic match savings investment.

    Advice to Management

Pay the candidates you have based on experience. Remove people in the company who lie to obtain labor. Create a commission structure that takes into account the type of works you want to recruit. Audit job postings and interviewees. Expand training to a legitimate length of time to learn the system and product rather than a shortened course due to being ill prepared to handle expected call volume.

I worked at Stream Global Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The colleagues and managers I worked with were generally friendly.

    Convenient cafe in the building.

Large break room includes computers and a pool table.

    It's a job.

    Cons

It is very easy to get burned out doing this kind of work. Unfortunately, despite having numerous contracts, the chance to switch

Your pay is better than minimum wage, but still atrocious given the amount of abuse you sometimes have to take on the phone from angry callers. If management decides to lower the wage for a group of new hires, guess what? Your wage gets bumped down too. There is position advancement, but only in the realm of more responsibility and not in regards to pay increase.

Your performance includes sales metrics for a technical support position; which doesn't mesh with the goal of technical support, which is to resolve people's technical issues. If you don't sell enough to meet a given sales total per month, you could be terminated; regardless of your work performance or if customers consistently give you praise.

Get to work late, even 5 minutes late for reasons completely out of your control, and you are the recipient of a penalty point. Get enough of these points in a given time frame and you are automatically terminated, regardless of your work performance. This system, in turn, rewards people for coming to work sick to avoid taking a penalty point and thus spreading illness throughout the office.

You are promised, as quoted in a job ad as "getting to pick your own schedule". This is not the case. You can submit hour ranges that you can work, but if you get assigned a schedule that you can't work, tough luck. You'll be terminated if you can't work it.

Because they are willing to hire almost anyone, you have zero job security. If they want you gone, they will find a reason and there will be more green recruits to fill your place once a manager has cleaned out your desk (and taken any possessions they might want before lumping everything else in a box and sending you on your way.)

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees more like people and less like cattle. Make people want to work there and you will get positive reviews as a result.
