Pros

One notable positive aspect of my experience was the diversity of projects I had the opportunity to work on. The company undertook a range of projects encompassing various scales, contexts, and typologies. This exposure allowed me to gain valuable experience in tackling different design challenges and broadened my understanding of the field. From urban parks to commercial spaces, each project presented unique opportunities for learning and honing my skills. The diverse project portfolio was undoubtedly a highlight during my time at the company.

Cons

One of the major drawbacks of my experience was the top-heavy management structure (10+ principals). The decision-making process often felt decentralized, with a lack of involvement and input from the lower-level employees. This hindered the firm's ability to contribute fresh ideas and perspectives. Additionally, the communication between management and the rest of the team was inadequate, leading to confusion and a lack of clarity on projects and objectives. Another significant issue I encountered was the limited room for growth within the company. Opportunities for advancement were scarce, and the hierarchy appeared rigid, making it difficult for junior professionals to progress in their careers. Despite my eagerness to learn and develop new skills, I found myself stuck in a repetitive cycle of tasks without any significant challenges or the chance to take on more responsibility. This lack of growth prospects ultimately led to frustration and a lack of motivation among the employees. In addition to the limited growth opportunities, the company's approach to professional development was lacking. There was a noticeable absence of initiatives aimed at enhancing our skills or expanding our knowledge base. Training sessions, workshops, and mentorship programs were virtually nonexistent, leaving us to rely solely on our own resources to stay updated with industry trends and best practices. As a result, my professional growth stagnated, and I felt that my potential was being underutilized. The absence of a collaborative work culture was also a significant disappointment. Team members were often siloed, working independently on projects, which limited the opportunity for shared learning and innovation. The lack of cross-functional collaboration hindered the exchange of ideas and hindered the potential for delivering truly outstanding designs.
