Pros

Extreme bright, dedicated, passionate, highly professional team. Very flat structure and high autonomy. Great challenges, high mobility, amazing communication. Great people; extreme talented, still very humble & friendly, kind and supportive workmates working on clean and very well organized code. People are truly taking pride in their work. State of art automatization & workflow. Absolutely professional attitude at all levels.

I have been working at StumbleUpon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Millions of engaged monthly users
Profitable and strong revenues (this is public)
Engineering centric culture. We are a personalization engine so investing heavily in Applied Research and Infrastructure
Active user community that curates, reviews, categorizes and shares content. In other words makes the web a better place. Love the overall mission
Employees work together and play together. I have friends and colleagues

    Cons

Shifting back to engineering roots. Correction has a been a painful, but necessary.
Attrition over the last 12 months as old timers move on. New blood isn't bad just lots of ramp up time.
It's an older brand, so sometimes deals with the baggage of "being an incumbent"

    Advice to Management

Fail fast, course correct and move on
    Keep investing in engineering talent
Community, Personalization need to be the focus. Don't take super users for granted!
Don't forget your users! Advertisers are important, but they come second
    Don't sugar coat

I have been working at StumbleUpon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Transparency, even when it hurts
Finally focusing on engineering and rewarding long term planning
Making tough more long term planning decision and ignores short term sugar highs with no real long term impact (this was a past mistake)
Culture of collaboration is strengthening. Focus on user community and innovation on personalization.
Strong revenue, profitable, and investing the user community

    Cons

Company grew very fast on the business and marketing side for a couple of years instead of focusing on engineering. The correction back to Eng was painful but long overdue
Team attrition, but getting more stable and has great Head of Eng in place to steady the ship

    Advice to Management

    Keep thinking long term
Don't be distracted by short term wins with no long term benefit
The underlying product is solid. People love StumbleUpon...double down on the experience
Keep investing in Recommendation/Personalization team...it's your core IP
