I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for less than a year

    Pros

-The pay is above market rate, but when you factor in the number of hours you're expected to work, it's not -The teacher work room has unlimited snacks -Benefits are good, but good luck finding the time (or energy) to use them -Students often end up receiving high test scores, but they also end up dealing with Success-induced depression and anxiety (check out StartUp's Success Academy podcast series for more info)...

    Cons

So. Many. Cons. I should note that your experience really depends on the school in which you are placed. To start, network lied to me, told me the school I interviewed at was not my permanent placement but my training placement and that my permanent placement would be within 50 minutes from my home (the school I interviewed at was a 1.5-2 hour commute each way). A month in, my principal told me not to expect a closer...

    Advice to Management

You REALLY need to start valuing your staff members. The type of turnover that has become normalized at Success is NOT what's best for students. Additionally, it is VERY important to have racial bias training. Any teacher white teacher who doesn't believe they have white privilege should not be at Success.

    Success Academy Charter Schools Response

    March 20, 2019Founder & CEO

We’re sorry that your time with us was not satisfying. Our teachers are trained to respond in a neutral tone when a student misbehaves, and while we believe in close classroom management and have high expectations for student behavior, we absolutely do not believe in or condone yelling ...

I have been working at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    • Work with the smartest people making the biggest difference in redefining what's possible in public education. • Make a positive impact on thousands of children's futures everyday. • Set the bar of excellence in teaching and learning. • Deliver world-class service to children, families, schools. • Enormous opportunity to grow professionally and hone one's craft.

    Cons

    • Challenging external factors limit the organization's ability to grow and serve more children and families: hostile mayor, incredible amounts of regulatory red tape, and an entire public sector union that wants you to fail.

I have been working at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

You will not find a more passionate, smart, committed group of people to work for anywhere else. It is incredible to work with such talented and amazing people. You can see the efforts of your work by how great our schools are; I take so much joy in walking down a hallway and peering into the classrooms and see amazing educators. Everyone has a lot of latitude, and is also encouraged, to challenge systems in...

    Cons

Challenging a system that is as deeply entrenched as public education is hard. However we continue to improve the level of support that each staff member is provided. SA even opened up a whole Education Institute to support in this effort.
