I have been working at Sungard Availability Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good people
    Clients
    Internal Support
    Salary is competitive

    Cons

Too much bureacracy, too much red tape to accomplish real change in a reasonable time frame.
Not enough training for managers - many are winging it. If you've got a good manager, great. If not, well you are on your own.

    Advice to Management

Make changes faster. Elimate barriers to change, eliminate knowledge silos. implement cross functional team projects to change processes. Stop making decisions in a vaccum. Stop the yearly reduction in force at holiday time, it's tough for the employees on both sides of the cuts.

I worked at Sungard Availability Services full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

great compensation package and learning center. Learn to multitask and do more with less

    Cons

Constance stress over management plan to bring the company back. Plan are ad hoc and can change day to day. No two managers are on same page of the play book. Procedure and accountability differ from shift to shift, closer you get to the deadline the shift at the end is totally accountable.
The new MRP program is a effort to save the company and up rite the ship that been sinking for years. But they did not look at staffing requirement before initiating thus they are hiring new talent with higher skill levels and have existing employee's train them to do their current roles. Current employees are told that they do not have the skill needed so therefore the can not advance upwards.

Management puts in place review goals yearly but only after they come up with them in January and filter them down in March. It would be nice if they could think ahead a year so they could really show some leadership. Every year it the same no goal in place have to wait for the new direction of the company instead of having a plan in place.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within there are quality people working there. Give the staff a road map on how and what improvement must be made for them to get to the next level. Don't pull the rug from under them coach them up, hire for the positions they vacated. These people have a vested interest in the Companies success. Upper level management need to have a long range plan and it has to be communicated down wards. And always remember that the staff on the floor is what Sungard produces to the customer that the product.
