I worked at Sutter Health full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

It's a job. Only work during the week, no weekends. Many nice, hardworking people within the company.

Cons

It's a job ... but they constantly make you feel like you're about to get fired. Constantly signing error reports, as if they are collecting a file of mistakes so they can fire you at any time. If you're in the click, you move up the ranks quickly, others will get nowhere ... you also get more perks in the click. Constantly talked down to. Only raise in years was around $.15 cents. Constantly changing software and programs, creating new scripts, and workflows. Probably the worst job to have at Sutter and the supervisors do nothing to make it better. The pay is far lower than Kaiser, with no unions. People are fired all the time for baseless reasons ... they'll make something up and then fight to keep you from getting unemployment.

Advice to Management

Find out what's going on within various departments; those best place to work surveys are a joke; hire/promote more ethnically diverse staff.

I have been working at Sutter Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company tries their best to get employees involved in their network of healthcare professionals - meaning, they have picnics, charity events, and things of the sort. The company is very large and it can be challenging to meet people in other departments at other locations; the company makes the effort to overcome the distance between employees and establish a network where you know a lot more Sutter Health employees than the people who work in your specific building. Additionally, the health system, often times, promotes from within and it is possible to quickly "climb the ranks" once you've proven yourself.

    Cons

The con is that Sutter Health is not union. The company does their best to keep the employes happy by offering night differentials and weekend differentials; however, I know of instances where an employee was, in my opinion, wrongfully terminated. Please do not get me wrong, these instances are rare, but still, they would be less likely to occur had a union been established.

    Advice to Management

Management is doing a great service by providing tuition reimbursement to its employees and offering scholarships to the children of employees; however, popularizing these programs would go a long way. Many employees, who may be interested in going back to school or getting more advanced licenses are unaware of these excellent services. It would be to your benefit to advertise these services in hopes that employees will use their newfound education to return the favor to the company and fill a very in-demand position.

I have been working at Sutter Health full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Company is very loyal. When a department is relocated or dissolved, they find internal positions in other departments for those who want to stay.
Lots of affiliates means lots of job opportunities if you want to do something else within the company.
Patient care is the priority over profit
Employees are involved in interviewing potential new hires, helping ensure they'll mesh with the group
    Company is growing and hiring

    Cons

Since 2008 they've cut some part of the benefits package every year, ended the profit-sharing bonus and reduced COL raises
Politics are horrible between regions, with executives frequently acting immaturely and vengeful towards other executvies
Under-performing employees or those in positions they can't handle are dealt with in any way
Promotions are based on favoritism over merit
Virtually impossible to get more than a 3% COL raise, regardless of performance. The only way to really raise your compensation is to change jobs within the organization
No training is provided. When you take on a new responsibility, you're expected to just figure it out on your own

    Advice to Management

    stop slashing benefits
    address toxic political atmosphere
    address underperforming employees
    Train your people
