I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It took a few years to find the 'right' management team but this really made the difference (as long as you like what you do!). They aren't too invasive as a company even though security is their background. Plenty of internal areas of opportunity. Excellent networking opportunities. Decent benefits and vacation. Flexible schedule depending on department. Good people in general.

    Cons

Conservative salaries. Lame office / cubical setups; no desire to make the workplace more appealing. No signs of a more progressive, modern or innovative culture. Lack of company trust from employees; fear of eventually being outsourced / off-shored. Annual R.I.F.'s (reduction in force).

    Advice to Management

Start investing in & recognizing your 'relevant' talent before you lose them. Besides having a job that you don't mind, there really is no incentive to stay.

  2. "Lack of leadership -- good intentions but no vision"

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice benefits. Smart people. Has some technical assets (e.g., NOCs, adaptive security) that are best-in-industry.

    Cons

Acquisitions have created a mess with overlapping sales forces and conflicting motives for lots of people. Leadership at the top doesn't seem to be able to articulate any unifying vision. Patent program and other evidence that the company values techies have all been trimmed.

    Advice to Management

Pick a strategy and stick with it. Divest.
