I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

You get to meet, work with, and establish relationships with a lot of great people.

Cons

Lots of management turnover and company seems to change priorities every quarter.

Advice to Management

Establish a consistent comp plan for salespeople and stick with it rather than change it every year

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good benefits

    Good compensation

People across all levels generally mean well, even if they are unwilling to expend the effort required to actually *do* well

    Cons

Almost no true alignment across product towers, which results in almost zero accountability for senior management when it comes to change, collaboration, new initiatives, etc.

Unbelievably difficult to sell and license products. Even the most basic sale seems to require at least three internal teams for review and, so there is no central information store for any given deal. Compounding the challenge, field teams have little real exposure to the customer experience (licensing portal, partner portal, etc.), so customers are exposed to processes their sales teams never see.

Bizarre attachment to established processes. Employees readily acknowledge a given process is broken, but then shrug their shoulders and fight any efforts to change.

Very political. If you are not in front of the right people, you will be silo'd and spend your days frustrated.

    Advice to Management

It will take more than a new CEO to fix Symantec's problems. Enrique may not have been the best leader, but he was only one person. The dysfunction and confusion native to Symantec has for years been embraced by senior management. To Steve Bennet -- look hard at your lieutenants, and make sure they are the ones who will actually implement the much-needed changes.

    Pros

    Applause awards
    Many opportunities to advance career
    Global company
    Ability to work remote

    Cons

Too many acquired companies trying to assimilate to one
Sr mgmt out of touch with core issues

    Advice to Management

Listen to your top performers about their concerns and devise a strategy to assist them before they leave from burnout
