"Good place for growth"

Pros

Given plenty of opportunities to grow your career provided you put the effort in. Competitive pay and benefits.

Cons

Given the size of the company, it's difficult to get consensus and getting things done. Management doesn't have one vision for the direction of the company.

Other Employee Reviews for Symantec

  1. "Random and frequent lay-offs"

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Smart people, excellent benefits and not overly crazy place to work

    Cons

Culture of fear where layoffs are regular and frequent occurance. It felt like layoffs where random and not tied to individual's performance, project or particular deliverable one has been assigned to. While there certainly were some wonderful people on the team, the management, some of which were out of northern California, never bothered to get to know the team.

    Advice to Management

Many of these people are gone by now but the big question is if the culture has also gone away since old habits die hard...

  2. "Good place to work, but comes with management and communication issues"

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits and compensation.
    Great work/life balance.
    Technically competent engineering staff.

    Cons

I always got the feeling that mid-/upper-management cares more about how they look to their bosses then they care about representing their direct reports. This leads to changes in policy and direction that don't make sense.
Sometimes important decisions are made without consulting the people that affect those changes the most.
Still poor communication and cooperation between teams ("That's not my problem, so I wont help").

    Advice to Management

Solicit the feedback from the direct contributors and show how you made changes in response to that feedback.
