I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Cafeteria and location in mountain view

Cons

Glad to see the CEO sacked. All he did was come in and perpetuate layoffs. Most of those laid off were individual contributors with the least political capital. The talk and political savvy people who know how to kiss butt are still in charge. The rule to success at symantec is to kiss your boss and the boss's boss butt, else you are just a number. Extremely vicious politics, shady management who know how to be unethical without being illegal, suppress anyone who has a voice or wants to do the right thing. The women managers are the worst. Join to get the experience on your resume, but do not stay here.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great solutions during exciting times in IT history.

    Cons

Constant management empire building internally. Disrupts customers, peoples lives and overall team atmosphere. See the mass exodus of talent this year as proof.

    Advice to Management

Stop empire building and putting yourself before your people. Success can be measured by the character of your people as well, not just how well they make you look and follow dictates.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Leading edge security software, promising hardware Appliance business.

    Cons

No firm road map to work from, manager did not firmly know the daily activities of the employees. Manager rarely kept weekly department meetings a new excuse every week.

    Advice to Management

Use HR to mandate managers to do quarterly or monthly meetings at the very least with employees. Set annual goals and track and document progress. Improve on boarding process. Be on time and prepared for meetings, walking from building to building on a cell phone is not considered attendance.
