Current Employee - Marketing Manager

Approves of CEO

Pros

Leader in nearly every category in which it competes. Excellent benefits. Very smart people. Good people who are respectful. Less politics in Marketing than in other major high-tech companies. High emphasis on continued training of employees.

Cons

Salaries not as high as I think they should be. Management is a bit too distant from front-line employees. Lack of strategic direction, more of a shotgun approach.

Advice to Management

Spend more time with front-line employees. Show greater appreciation of their hard work. Talk more about the strategy of acquisitions and how they fit in the overall picture to make the company more competitive. Do a better job at acquisition integration. Reduce complexity. Simplify!!!

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

Lots of resources, great benefits, people generally are willing to assist, lots of products to sell, supportive of training and personal development, efforts to communicate what is happening to staff

    Cons

Large company, lots of politics, aging product line and lack of product integration, many acquisitions and organizational integration efforts, very large quotas with little basis on what is possible for a given territory, changes in product and channel strategy do not appear to be fully analyzed and poorly communicated

    Advice to Management

Find a way to make the company feel smaller and less bureaucratic; avoid the "shiny penny" syndrome (tend to focus for a few months on the most recent acquisition and integration; lose sight of the bigger picture and the employees that have been working in the trenches)

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

Industry leader in security and systems management. Tries to be on the cutting edge of new technologies as they relate to the product space.

    Cons

Much of the work is moving to offshore contractors. Symantec grows by acquiring companies, cutting the fat and then integrating what is left. This means only the core talent will remain after Symantec has pared down the product to the core pieces needed.

    Advice to Management

Be more proactive about helping those assigned to teams are affected by the "fat" trimming to be able to find other challenging positions within the company.
