I worked at TD Ameritrade as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Corporate culture is great. Definitely get the sense that they mean what they say in their missions and values.

Flexible schedules that give you a choice of what shifts to work so you can work it around your classes

Rotates you through the different departments of Investor Services giving you insight and exposure to different opportunities.

Provides employee's with market knowledge that wouldn't be touched upon typically in university classes.

With a large proportion of TD Ameritrade's revenue coming from interest receivable, company stands to grow rapidly if the economy recovers and interest rates are raised

Cons

20 hours a week if a bit much for students for an internship during the school year, especially if they have to commute. 20 hours a week is a bit light during the summer time.

The work you'll be doing during your internship, while interesting and enjoyable, doesn't really prepare you for what you would actually be doing as a full-time employee.

Compensation is very low compared to other companies in the industry. Starting pay is light, and the opportunities for advancement appear to be horizontal moves, not vertical moves. Makes career advancement difficult

Advice to Management

Provide better compensation to employee's to help attract top-notch talent. Integrate better leadership program's to better help vertical advancement opportunities for employee's.

I have been working at TD Ameritrade full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-A lot of opportunity to learn about the broker/dealer industry
    -Excellent benefits package
-Most of the Asst. Managers, Managers, and Senior Managers understand the associate experience and where they are coming from.

    Cons

-Pay is lousy (this is in Institutional, I can't speak for other wings of the company)
-Because the pay is lousy there is very little talent, and all the existing talent eventually leaves
-Senior management is disconnected and does not know what anyone does

    Advice to Management

Higher compensation = More talent = Reduced costs in the long-run

There should be more opportunities for recognition, differentiation, and advancement of associates and middle managers.
