I worked at TG full-time (More than a year)

Pros

The building is nice, and the location in La Frontera is better than anywhere else in Round Rock. The employer retirement contributions are great by private sector standards. The educational reimbursement is very generous. Branding and company-wide communications are professional and done well. Initial training is extensive, and there are many training classes constantly being offered that you can choose to attend. Some of the classes are more warm and fuzzy, which is a nice break. The annual bonus was a positive. I met some genuinely good people. This seems to be a good place to work if you're not on the phone.

Cons

TG talks a lot about college access, but the company's existence is based on its almost contradictory role as a glorified collections agency so if you have to be on the phone, you are going to have to talk to some very unhappy people. Almost all senior and supervisory positions were obtained by long-term employees who are still hanging on from the company's glory days in the time of FFELP. There is little opportunity for advancement here, and an ever declining loan volume meant getting laid off was always a possibility. There was a constant influx of employees coming and going out the door. All the revenue at TG is brought in by employees on the phone, while there are many employees off the phone who make more compensation yet add little value to the company. HR plays an exceptionally large role in management decisions and politics at TG. Promotion was mostly based on the good ol' boy system, not skill or added value.

Advice to Management

I have been working at TG full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Motivated workforce, employee-oriented, service-oriented, excellent benefits, good facility, high priority on security of information and safety and health of employees

    Cons

Limited career advancement, a lot of people have been here for 10, 15, 20, 25, and even 30 years. Good place to get some experience but then you may need to move on to advance.
