Pros

Benefits, competitive salaries, professional development, depending on position flexible scheduling, nurturing, family like atmosphere. Many of the employees at Tampa Electric have been with the organization for 10+ years which creates a friendly, family like culture. Most of the leaders live out the core values, some more than others but overall they live by example. There are many competent professionals and leaders and (prior to this economy) promotional opportunities do occur reasonably often.

Cons

Like most utilities this one is conservative, risk averse and somewhat slow to embrace new ideas that don't involve building a generation facility. There are pockets of ineffective leaders/management that the company is slow to do anything about.

Advice to Management

Hold all management and top executives accountable to the same behaviors that you expect from the front line managment. Keep the values at the forefront.

    Pros

This is a good employer overall in this area. The company hires carefully, and there are many great people who've worked there a long time who truly care about their work. The benefits are in keeping with other local companies and HR leaders care about providing good medical/dental insurance, at the best prices they can negotiate. Top management is visible and communicates fairly effectively and often. Training and development is encouraged.

    Cons

The company can be stodgy, and slow to adapt to trends and marketplace changes. Crippling political correctness is an issue in corporate headquarters. The board and top management could be more diverse. Old computer systems hamper customer service improvements. Those who are not Christian may feel uncomfortable in what is a pretty homogenous management culture.

    Advice to Management

Good job getting rid of a certain exec who consistently disrespected employees and peers. That says volumes about living the company's values!
