I have been working at Taproot Foundation (More than 3 years)

Pros

Selective application process leads to working with great, talented groups of consultants incl graduates from selective institutions and strong prof profiles. Organizational profile is strong. Projects are comprehensive and stimulating for those with business and consulting backgrounds. Offers reasonable sense of fulfillment in contributing toward deserving, reasonable causes.

Cons

Non-Profits aren't always ready to submit sufficient information to make projects more practical and substantial. Sometimes non-profit contacts are too busy to be very responsive. Commitment by volunteers isn't always strong with some dropping out early causing disorganization. Taproot could promote itself more, as many employers don't recognize its reputation.

Advice to Management

Have non-profits contribute more background and organizational info to analyze. Othwrwise, many of the analytical outcomes can be less focused/useful. Have volunteers recognize commitment such that if they incur 3+ 'drop-outs' in a, for example, 18 mo period, they should be suspended from future projects for at least 6-12 months.

    Pros

Work with a group of top-notch professionals. Taproot also has excellent templates and planning tools to help all members get the job done well. All job projects are 4-5 hours per week so you can balance even in addition to a full time job. All clients are non-profits are desperately need help with marketing and biz dev.

    Cons

    Work is pro-bono - volunteer.

    Advice to Management

A better way to use Taproot experiences on volunteers' resumes - 360 reviews, write-ups from corporate about success of the project. If supervisor becomes unavailable after the project I can't use Taproot as a referral source on my resume. Should be able to get filed and held at company about my performance and contribution so anyone can call for referral.

I worked at Taproot Foundation as an intern

    Pros

    - Great mid-level management to mentor junior staff
    - Well respected amongst nonprofit and pro-bono consultants alike
    - Great potential to grow because need is huge

    Cons

    - Seemed to be very little transparency around operations from senior management
    - Bad compensation for junior level staff, no compensation for interns
