I worked at Target full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

good training
good mentorship
you learn how to lead
hardwork pays off
good pay

Cons

its retail
"the jet is out" mentality so always worried about the big "visit"
hero today....bad visit....zero tomorrow
saw many 20 year managers that struggled in their last assignemnt and they were encouraged to leave or fired

Advice to Management

not always consistent in the message
what you need to accomplish to get to the next step in your career was a moving target

    No opinion of CEO

    I worked at Target full-time

    Pros

    Continuos focus on leadership skills
    Professionalism of leadership all around
Systems work well and they have very few hiccups in their execution of anything they set out to do, you feel a sense of achievement with them, more than most other retailers

    Cons

    Hours and schedules vary often
You do better if you were externally recruited rather than going through their internal promotional opportunities.
Very little autonomy as a leader when it come to team or guest issues.

    Advice to Management

Stop wasting time recruiting from colleges and start looking internally for real talent.

    Neutral Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Target full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Pay at DC
    Benefits average
Some DC's good but not all
    10% employee discount
    401k is decent
    Pension

    Cons

    Personal/professional are not seperate
Ordered to find people to fire for no reason
Rules apply to some but not all
Target policy is only good for some, others do not get the benefit of policy
Hard work, good record with company means NOTHING
Prepare to keep your job 2-3 years, anything longer is "borrowed time" they will be looking to get rid of you.
Don't expect to retire from specific locations, you will lose your job before you can retire
    Unable to retain staff
Hire young staff to "mold them" to what they want, yet if you have ideas you are shot down
They only want people to say yes and never say anything else. -no questions.
You can not use the "open door policy" or you will be terminated.
Gl's come in with ideas Target says no. You are just a number to them. When you reach a specific age you will be on the road way to exit.
    Improper Terminations.
    does not promote from within.
You can have a degree in oceanography and be qualified to lead a maintenance staff (knowing nothing about the department). However if you have 20 years experience you will be treated as the trash on the floor.
CEO doesn't care and forwards all concerns to the customer service department.
You will be pushed to your breaking point at one specific DC and it is the place you work to get fired or be forced out.
Just when you think your job is safe, your gone.

    Advice to Management

Follow policy for all. Seperate personal from professional. Stop seeking to destroy, keep qualified staff, let the violators go- instead you let good staff go and keep the trouble. Never seen anything like it. Allow for fresh ideas. Allow folks to retire with the company. Promote from within if earned. Hire people for the departments who have a clue about the type of work they are supervising. I'm sure Target will continue to have ups and downs but over all it will remain the same and do what it wants to people. Eventually though, Enough things will happen to enough people and the employee abuse will come out and be rather embarrassing.
