I have been working at Teradata full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Customers: without those, companies would never last. Deep pockets result: willing to invest in longer-term to deliver actual value. Ability to time-shift or telecommute since the company is widely distributed.

Cons

Far too many acronyms and old "processes" that just slow things down. Management then tends to just repeat buzzwords instead of being organized. Many employees do not speak English well.

Advice to Management

More people actually doing work instead of "product managers" "project managers" and "development realization team leaders" that just have meetings filled with empty slides.

I have been working at Teradata full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Almost all jobs have been moved from India back to the US

    Cons

    - No training process
    - No quality assurance
    - No testing process
    - No long term plans, goals, or vision
    - Learning about new technologies is discouraged
    - Use of new technologies is strictly forbidden
    - Very high turnover -- talented workers leave very quickly
    - Below average pay and benefits. Cost of living raises only.
    - You cannot get a promotion unless a higher position is publicly listed
    - You must apply for higher positions the same way as people outside the company
    - You must supply your own keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc.
    - "Cube Farm" office building
    - Developers are also the front line for user support, and carry pager 24/7
    - Projects are approved based on lowest initial cost with no consideration given to long-term costs
    - Managers and directors regularly contribute to the code base, make deployments, run schema changes, etc.
    - Development is done directly on production environments
    - Resources are shared between teams. Communication between teams is forbidden.
    - Communication between team members must be kept to a minimum
    - Customer data, including IP addresses and passwords for their production systems, is not secure and is not treated with respect
    - Customer contracts are not accessible to IT so that we can claim "plausible deniability"
    - Networking bandwidth, disk storage, laptop capabilities, etc. are extremely limited
    - No recognition for work well done
    - "Cowboy Coding" mentality prevails, no plans or processes are ever provided
    - Management is not aware of industry trends or standard practices
    - Constantly use the wrong tool for the job. Consistently re-invent the wheel.
    - Management does not see any of the above as problems, but even if they did, they would be powerless to change the situation

    Advice to Management

The entire IT department in Miamisburg needs to be replaced, along with their corresponding business stakeholders and managers across the globe. If our customers knew how their data was being treated, they wouldn't be our customers for very long.

I have been working at Teradata full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Free coffee and soda
    - Nice campus with walking path
    - Generally relaxed atmosphere
    - "Unlimited" sick time (it's complicated)
    - 401k matching and stock purchase plan are offered

    Cons

    - The company operates like a bunch of "separate fiefdoms".
    - Teams do not collaborate with each other.
    - The company runs on Excel and Oracle solutions internally - "islands of information" is an understatement.
    - IT controls the tools and is completely out of touch with current technology.
    - Promotions are non-existent.
    - Ambition is not recognized.

    Advice to Management

Databases (hardware and software) are commodities these days. Transition to selling software licensing and services.

Don't ignore the potential of emerging technologies. When you decide to pursue one, don't waste resources creating smoke and mirrors product offerings around it.

Move the entire company off of Excel and Oracle solutions. Oracle is Teradata's biggest competitor, we should not be buying solutions from them. Excel is the devil, it leads to nothing but confusion and misinformation. Hire developers to make real tools.

The sole responsibility of an IT organization should be infrastructure. They should be responsible for keeping servers and desktops running and talking - that's it. Put the tools in the hands of in-house developers.

Promote collaboration through tools, events, meet-ups, hack-a-thons, etc. At least get the engineers talking to one another about what they are working on, challenging problems they have faced, solutions they've come up with, etc.
