I have been working at Texas Department of Public Safety full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Good work/life balance.
My manager was excellent. He had decades of experience in the IT industry.
Very safe. No worry about layoffs, provided you did your job.

Cons

Top leadership is incompetent. But that's what we get for our tax money.
Lifers abound there. No imagination whatsoever.
Cafeteria food is terrible. No wonder there are so many whales working there.

Advice to Management

FOCUS. Quit getting distracted by every little thing. It's only partially their fault though, as the state legislators are constantly making hair-brained requests of the leadership team.

I worked at Texas Department of Public Safety as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Low stress since there's no pressure to work, work/life balance is good because you don't really work much (and others shared that they love that about working there)

    Cons

Not enough work to do, employees just chat and take breaks a lot, undercurrent of distrust throughout the organization I was in (and people let you know that pretty much daily), most folks I talked to the very short time I was there hated working there and were wanting to leave

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees to understand their concerns, figure out resolutions, and work to make things better. I know it's a Government job, but I think folks should be encouraged to do the best they can and be productive.

    Pros

They are always hiring, not surprised.

    Cons

Don't care when a person is going through a hard time. Don't make any mistakes or they'll boot you out without a care in the world. BUT apparently other employees who do all sorts of crap get to stay... If you don't fit into their mold they don't care.

    Advice to Management

    Compassion, learn it.
