I have been working at The Clorox Company full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

The people are amazing - smart, driven, and capable - and focused on building a terrific portfolio of household brands. The company truly does live by its values, creating an organization of people who are focused on doing the right thing in a respectful manner. Not only is the CPG marketing program great, but they invest in training employees too.

Cons

Like many large companies, there is a lot of bureaucracy and stage gates that prevent teams from moving fast. That can be especially difficult when contrasted against the really agile Bay Area start-up culture.

Also, as a lean and flat company, there aren't many promotions available. They instead tend to keep things interesting by shifting assignments and roles. Not necessarily a con, but certainly something to be aware of.

Advice to Management

Continue hiring great people - my coworkers are wonderful and I'm inspired by management.

    Pros

Career oriented, employee oriented, safety oriented company that seeks to find ways to help employees live better lives. It may be in part to lower health insurance costs, but there are lots of resources available to improve health and lifestyle. Benefits are great, including generous 401K matching above contribution of employee (10% contributed by employer when 4% is contributed by employee), good insurance plan with little hassle, and easy to manage resources.

    Cons

They pay lower than average wage for the position I am in.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate competitive wages for the positions in your company

I have been working at The Clorox Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Smart people who are all fairly dedicated to their work. Good training ground. Chance to learn how large CPG's were operated for success in the 80's and 90's which has its value. Great bay area location - Oakland is up and coming in a lot of ways. Mostly easy work with good work/life balance. In the long run, stable company with a good dividend. Think about it as the fixed income part of your portfolio and you'll be happy.

    Cons

Very old school leaders from the Director level on up. The visionaries and more creative leaders leave to go elsewhere because the system here doesn't reward discontinuous thought. Like most CPG's, the company has hit a major stall point on the topline and doesn't have many good ideas to fix it/can't afford to fund the ideas it does have. Senior management is starting to show signs of fatigue and the company seems stuck in the mid-1980's way of running a CPG company. The world has changed and Clorox has struggled to keep up. Process for process sake. Hierarchy. Functional silos. It's everything John Kotter would rail against. The hardest part is that those above a certain level just don't get it - many have never worked anywhere else and they think it is normal. A few bad bonus years and lower than average stock award payouts may make them think otherwise. Compensation is low when benchmarked against other bay area companies which will likely make it hard to retain top talent over the long run.

    Advice to Management

Need to reward creativity and vision. This is currently a brand maintenance culture not a brand building culture. Open up to the vibrancy and innovation of the bay area. Welcome ideas that grow businesses vs. grow margins. The 2020 strategy reads as business as usual, but the world has changed.
