I worked at The Container Store part-time (More than a year)

Pros

They have one of the highest hourly pays for sales associates and a month long training/orientation where you learn every single aspect of the company.

Cons

There are fake people who put on a show with customers and then act miserable behind closed doors. When you need a day off you need to request it a month in advance or find someone to switch hours for you- as a part-timer who has the time to track ppl down to take your hours?? There is no real teamwork- if you ask a question you get treated as a reject. Management is never on the sales floor- always behind closed doors apparently "working"...they expect you to do weekly voicemails to them to tell them about your experience for the week- waste of time!

Advice to Management

Stop acting like you are part of a secret society. Stop acting as if you are really working- doing schedules should not take 8 hrs.

I have been working at The Container Store part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Flexibility with work scheduling
    Excellent employee discount
    Good relationship among employees
    Excellent Training
    Teamwork among prime-time employees excellent.

    Cons

Sales training is good, but not enough manpower on the floor to put man in the desert selling into effect.
Company gives a raise range, but even the best sales people don't receive that percentage, due to management trying to keep payroll down. This is a recent development over the last 2 years, since enactment of bonus for store managers to reach payroll goal.
All-store meetings take away from payroll to be used on sales floor during that month.
Full time staff spends too much time answering to Corporate by email, conference calls, etc... leaving little time for supervision to what is actually going on on the floor.
As each store is added (Now at 57) more bureaucracy is added to the mix, and the more the company seems to be more like other retailers where profits are more important than employees.
"Health Insurance" for prime-timers not really anything useful. It even gives a warning that it is not considered health insurance in the state of MA.
The company believes that they can teach personality by doing these role plays every morning. We get the message. You can't teach someone how to be brave or have the gift of gab needed for sales. Hire people that have sales ability, not try to drum it into their head every morning.

    Advice to Management

Your full time staff is a good portion of your payroll budget. You can't control what goes on on the sale floor if only one full time employee is on the floor at one time. Be more responsive to requests for help on the floor, and get more full timers on the floor when we are busy. Sales staff has been slashed so much that full timers have to help out on the floor, otherwise we will never make company goals for the year

I have been working at The Container Store part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fun atmosphere. There is always a air of fun, joy and excitement.

    Cons

There is some favoratism between mangamnet and long term employee's. Working in Texas heat it is unrealistic to not be able to wear shorts in summertime.. very hot work environmnet. Expectations to sell elfa becomes burdensome. The comapny claims it puts employees first but the truth of the matter is that it puts profits first. Giving employees a discount is not exactly a wonderful perk especailly if you can't afford products (even with discount). I would have rather had the money than the discount. Health isurance is extremely minimum and does not even pay for a complete physical.

    Advice to Management

I would not make suggestions here, this company is on a path that will always be the core of the company. Sell elfa to every customer even if you have to convince them. Any advice I would have would not change this.
