I have been working at The Fresh Market full-time

Pros

Easy to get hired. Starting pay is acceptable. Good introduction to grocery.

Cons

Weeks of management training wasted - most of your time will be spent stocking grocery shelves and cleaning the store. Corporate controls all aspects of store - district managers and store managers have no control over stores. Employees control management - holding the staff accountable is very difficult and it is rarely permitted by district managers and store managers.

Advice to Management

Better planning and execution concerning all aspects of operation. On-site managements needs to run the stores, not corporate. On-site management needs to be permitted to manage, not be told to stock grocery shelves. Less managers and more supervisors - too many managers at the same level all trying to go in different directions. Store managers and district managers need to be able to manage - they need authority.

I worked at The Fresh Market full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

20% employee discount. 401(k) options. You will become a "handyman" due to the company buying poor equipment that you will have to fix. Good time off for vacations.

    Cons

No one in the corporate office has any idea what it takes to run a grocery store and this is the fault of the CEO and COO who only are looking to profit from this company. Your best employees are regular associates, department heads typically have no idea what they are doing. For example: they will promote a cashier to deli manager without any experience and won't interview the assistant deli managers. So the assistant deli managers now have to train their new boss. Once you are a department head, you can do no wrong. Screw up the order for supplies, don't worry about it. The manager will talk down to everyone else in the deli because they should've let the deli manager know what was needed. This applies for all other departments too. They do not train anyone, you must learn it on your own. Things break, you must fix them yourself. They are so tight on hours, you'd be amazed that there are 12 people working in a store. Example: the master schedule reads 320 hours for your department, the district manager wants more money in his bonus and cuts hours to 285. You now have periods of time during store hours where a department is grossly under-staffed. And who does that hurt the most: customers.

You will be spoken to like a five year old child at least once a day by management. You will have to lie to the customers on the reason a item is out of stock or wasn't ordered. 25% of your supplies and goods on the truck will come in damaged because they use the cheapest outside company to ship goods. I've seen pallets of raw chicken sit out of the cooler for over 8 hours because no one has the time to put it away and the departments will still use it!

I've seen great employees sitting in the breakroom crying do to what I've described above.

    Advice to Management

This part doesn't matter. They won't read this. Or if they do, they won't care.
