I have been working at The Goddard School full-time (More than a year)

Pros

They potentially have great hours to work if you haggle them and don't allow them to change your schedule, you get 5 days off every year for Christmas vacation, as long as you put in 2 weeks notice for vacation days and no one else is off on those days they are always granted, if you love kids then you will definitely have a ton of kids to love one.

Cons

When you call for anything (bathroom break, ice pack, things for your class room, etc.) it never comes you have to call again sometimes multiple times to go to the bathroom or get anything. If you work 8-5 you almost never get off at 5 it is usually around 5:15 or 5:30. In the mornings you are left over ratio frequently. Salaries are not consistent people with more education and experience get paid less than teachers who have less education and experience than them. You do not get a yearly review or a yearly raise and if you ask for a raise you are almost always told no. There is a very big turn over rate with teachers, most leave to take a job that is less stressful and/or pays more money. The office staff at times can be extremely rude and unprofessional, schedules are made on a daily basis so lunch times and what not change daily.

Advice to Management

Treat your teachers better and at least act like you value your good teachers and maybe you won't have 9+ teachers leave in a 2 month period.

I worked at The Goddard School full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Love the children and the opportunity to watch them grow.

    Cons

Extreme favortism of certain employees who get away with things that other employees are held accountable for. Owners and directors violate DSS policies and even their own policies and directors and those in charge have no experience in education and try to run the business as a coorporate entity. Teachers are replaced with others who have no experience in education and children are continuously shifted from one classroom to the other to satisfy ratio requirements. Parents have no idea this goes on all day long and management tries to hide this problem from the parents. Demands on staff are high with no realistic way of accomplishing what is expected but still held accountable. Not enough time to teach children when more time is having to be spent with other paperwork and daily tasks.

    Advice to Management

Need to be educated on what is age appropriate and realize their education is more important than the required daily paperwork that takes away from actually teaching. Need to be educators making decisions, not people with business degrees.

I worked at The Goddard School full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The center is beautiful, the parents were involved and caring and the children were wonderful. The curriculum was diverse and easily tailored to fit individual classes.

    Cons

As a franchise, owners do not have to be knowledgeable in early childhood best practices. For this reason, they can run their schools however they see fit, whether that be for the benefit of the children and families, or for their own reasons. At this school, the owner disregarded advice from the directors she hired and proceeded to engage in completely inappropriate and unprofessional acts towards staff members. Company checks came too late, and any actions taken to rectify the situations that occurred were ineffective.

    Advice to Management

If you have hired a director, based on his/her experience and expertise in the early childhood field, be sure to let him/her use that knowledge to run the school. This is the only way to keep a school at capacity, and to hire -and retain- quality teachers.
