I worked at The Hartford as a contractor (Less than a year)

Pros

The hours were flexible, the work was engaging & compensation was very fair. Very friendly atmosphere and helpful co-workers. Finally had gotten token access for remote access to work from home relieving commute time altogether.

Cons

If having to commute it is a bit far, and takes time away from family social time if having to leave late catching evening traffic.

Advice to Management

Reach out often and have touch points.

I worked at The Hartford full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The workers are nice, upper management takes their directives from further up the chain. Not much fighting for the employee who is bombarded from all directions.

    Cons

    micro managed, robotic, numbers driven

    Advice to Management

Be real. Try to remember what is was like handling a desk. Better yet, go sit with your people and see what comes at them all day, every day.

I have been working at The Hartford full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are above par, ability to work from home occasionally is a plus. There seems to be a sure preference to hire from within, if you can find a job you can stay with long enough.

    Cons

Pay is lacking, management is completely inept at doing their job. Why they keep putting people in charge of claims who haven't handled claims before is beyond me... Don't believe a word that's said during an interview, you might get promised no more than X claims a month, but expect at least twice that. The staffing model is held to be holy gospel, no matter what the employees say to the contrary on how inaccurate it is. Turnover is constant and nothing is done to address the problems causing it, just more work piled onto those that remain. Training is lousy, software is antiquated and clunky. Everything possible is outsourced to India, don't ever call the IT desk with any problems, you won't understand what they're saying and if your problem isn't on one of their scripts, it won't get fixed anyway. 40 hour workweek is just "suggested", expect to put in at least 50 to stay afloat. Better hit those metrics too, or you'll be quick out the door!

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees when they tell you there's a problem. Perhaps consider coming out of your locked office once in a while and actually getting to know those that work for you? Live up to the expectations you set for your employees at the outset.
