    Pros

Good pay and benefits, decent opportunities to transfer within Company. Content of work can be complex and interesting if in the right job and area. Company has some pockets of excellence, some very ethical people. Hartford retains good brand recognition and is still positively regarded by most customers despite huge mistakes and financial troubles starting in 2008. New management is trying to address.

    Cons

Old line culture with top down management style. Political environment. Competence often secondary to staying in boss' favor. Many supervisors "manage up", are poor managers, insecure about developing staff to their own level. Expected to be a "team player" and support your boss even on dumb ideas. This problem at executive levels probably contributed to Hartford's near downfall in 2008. New management will be challenged to change this culture.

    Advice to Management

Employees are watching you at all times. Be real. Be trustworthy. Lead by example and do the right thing. Make the Company a place where good people are proud to work. Listen to bright staff that know and care passionately about the Company. Promote substance, not appearance. Encourage ethical behavior and competence over political astuteness. Think what is best for long term legacy (300 year anniversary?) as well as short term. Take personal responsibility to develop your people to their full potential.
