I worked at The Julia Brown Montessori Schools full-time

Pros

Pretty good hours for me but not for everyone.

Cons

Management can be overbearing. Insurance was expensive. Not much room for climbing the company ladder.

I worked at The Julia Brown Montessori Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I liked the children, very kind and respectful. I liked the building and the classroom set up. They had extensive materials and offered training. Long time employees got fully paid vacations.

    Cons

Did not always agree with management. Not allowed to call in sick, had to come and management would assess if you were allowed to go home. Also, even though it didn't happen to me, other employees having pregnancy difficulties were told they had to stand longer than their doctor had recommended for their health. Reasonable accommodations such as a chair was not allowed. Understandably lead to high turnover of hourly staff.

    Advice to Management

Bathroom breaks and support are important. Do not leave a teacher alone in a room with children for 6 hours without any possibility of break.

    Pros

It's a great entry level experience for anyone interested in working with children. They reimburse you for taking the 90 hour certification courses and pay for other courses such as CPR. They offer great benefits after the 90 day probation is over.

    Cons

The administrators literally fuss at the staff like children. Staff is told not to socialize outside of work hours and you have to stand separately from other staff members while you are working and not speak to them. They do not follow traditional Montessori procedures. Administrators are overbearing and very controlling. They only pay staff (hourly employees) ONCE a month despite the law in Maryland being that wages must be revived at least twice a month. The turnover rate for employees is VERY high because the staff is not treated well. As a teacher's assistant you have to stand all day and tgey encourage you to use only non-verbal communication with the children. Additionally, you aren't allowed to communicate with the parents concerning their children, even though you are the one spending the entire day with them.

    Advice to Management

Learn to appreciate your employees and they will stay longer. People dread coming to work when you micromanage them and fuss at them like children. I feel so sorry for the new employees who do not know what they've gotten themselves into.
