I worked at The Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago) full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

It is one of the top 10 science museums in the world. You can impact over a million people a year. It has a rich history in Chicago, generations of families visit all the time.

Cons

Management changes continue to dumb down the guest experience. Seriously, people in rainbow colored lab coats with "flair" on their lanyards taking guests through the U-505? There are only 5 of them left in the world, it's a WWII memorial. How disrespectful.

Advice to Management

Find a way to instill a sense of respect for yourselves. Trite catchwords painted on the walls are no substitute for taking the time to listen to your staff.

    Pros

Opportunity to educate and inform. Like-minded colleagues. Chances to learn on the job. Heavy interaction with the general public.

    Cons

Management attitude towards floor staff means that promotion to other departments will not occur. Occasional stereotypical non-profit disorganization. Heavy interaction with the general public.

    Advice to Management

If the facilitating staff no longer were treated as disposable, staff performance would correspondingly improve.
