I worked at The World Bank part-time (More than a year)

Pros

Very friendly and open culture. Almost anyone you email and ask will meet you for coffee and talk about their work. Lots of opportunities for networking. Tons of interesting projects, although it depends on your area. Looks great to other employers on the resume.

Cons

Just be aware that very few STCs move on to be staff. This is not really a downside if you're not counting on it, but a lot of STCs spend a ton of time there waiting for a staff position that will never develop. This always seemed pretty clear to me, but some people hate it. For those who do make staff it's a great job, but there's relatively little room for advancement within the organization.

Advice to Management

Could be doing more to recruit and retain young talent.

I have been working at The World Bank as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Interact with key organizations working in development field
    - Work with very intelligent people
    - Learn about development on the macro level

    Cons

    - very bureaucratic
    - things move slow
    - many people are jaded after working here for a long time
    - a lot of people work at the WB for the wrong reasons and don't seem that passionate

    Advice to Management

Dismantle the hierarchy a bit more to encourage team work. Don't rely so much on consultants. The high turn around rate and strict limitations on consultants seem very inefficient and you need more long-term people working on projects

I worked at The World Bank as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Diverse, well-paid, challenging, and fast-paced (a rarity for an NGO)

    Cons

Highly political, corrupt, and management is a mess or self-interested.

    Advice to Management

Check into your corruption with projects and contracting.
