Pros

The company produces great products and they are truly a leader in its field, and very good at what they do. They provide great innovations in science, and are on the cutting edge of scinetific discovery, whether it is genomics, proteomics, stem cell research, and even in heavy manufacturing, such as pretoleum refining, oil and gas exploration, steel manufacturing, coal mining and other industries. They started out as a holdign company, but in recent years, they have divested some of their businesses and focused more on their core business of life sciences. They are also looking to buy companies all the time.

Cons

Not too well organised, too much infighting withing divisions, not enough direction from top management

Advice to Management

Try caring more about what's beyond next quarter's earnings. Where do you want to be in a year? 5 years? Help employees do better by providign a career path

    Pros

You need a paycheck. There were some great coworkers but the culture is stuck.

    Cons

Austin facility is full of people who do not want to change. There is a very clear split between the people who have been there awhile. Some have not been on a job interview in 45 years. Yes, you heard me right. Not been on an interview in 45 years. There are some very unethical things that go on that are largely a result of negative groupness issues and ignorance. "The good old boy network."

    The list goes on.

    Advice to Management

This is 2009 there are many things that have changed since the companies inception. The founders had a great deal of vision and risk taking. To grow and strengthen the company you need to lead it like the founders did. The company is being managed, sustained not lead. The boxes are checked off on Lean and other continuous improvement programs but the reality is that there is a very large gap between saying something and living it. Toyota lives it. Thermo justifies it.

    Pros

Working for TMO you feel like a party of a family and are treated like a valued member of the team. Even though this is a global company you feel that you can call any co-worker any where in the world and get the answers you need to get your job done.

    Cons

The size of the company can be intimidating and some times causes change to occur slowly due to the large amount of paper work and signatures required to get things approved, also due to peoples travel schedules some times you can not get the required signatures in a timely manner.

    Advice to Management

Always remeber you are only as good as your weakest employee so focus on developing your staff.
