I worked at Toray Composites as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Great people, and a fun atmosphere to work in. Everybody is willing to help you out, and barbecues/parties happen frequently. Company is very multicultural with the Japanese ties. Production workers and office workers get along very well and there doesn't seem to be much of a wall between the groups.

Cons

Promotion from within is great for some positions. Others, not so much. Also, too conservative with approach to cost savings. Management is very top heavy. Also, need to have more trust in lower level managers. If CEO, say no, then its a no. Really missed out on tons of potential improvements because of this.

Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to try new things.

I worked at Toray Composites full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay. Great benefits. Some areas are great and have good managers who care and try (Sales, QA, HR, Accounting, Technical). They end up getting pushed out or made a scape goat by bullies.

    Cons

Bad managers who aren't qualified. Promotions based on favorites. Some managers disregard rules to play favorites. Silos. Working long hours is expected, but not admitted to. Unreasonable expectations. Sabotaging others for personal gain. Top management allows this to happen. If you are smart and a good worker, it will soon be sucked out of you, especially if you work in the offices and management. Production is king so they are treated better and protected by the top. They can do no wrong. If you are not in production, you are not important. Problems are ignored or hidden. President is liked by hourly employees but not by managers. People backstab for their own gain and he ignores it. Don't complain about a bully because he will protect them. You can get promoted if you are liked by production. Don't work here. It will suck your soul.

    Advice to Management

Don't just say that you care. Show by action. Listen to employees. Promote based on ability, not on favorite. Stop allowing people to bad talk others. Don't jump all over those who try to speak up. Listen to them, you might learn something. Stop letting bullies rule or you will lose more good people.
