Pros

Family friendly in not working long hours and half day Fridays in the summer

Mgmt with great vision and programs promoting employee contributions in cost savings

Attempting to bring in new methodologies and purchasing practices

Cons

Some mgmt are not qualified for their positions and are not able to execute the new methodologies or unite departments through this change
male dominated

Advice to Management

Provide consistent vision among departments

Listen to the people doing the work as you attempt to bring in new methodologies and how processes need to be transitioned without simply forcing change

    Pros

    Most work groups work 40 hours a week which creates a good work/life balance. Summer hours provide people with an additional day off on Fridays. People generally know what they are doing because they have been in the same position for many years. Despite being a boys club, upper management seems dedicated to making the company successful as opposed to being focused on their individual desires. Pay is on par but 401K could use improvement.

    Cons

    Very limited opportunity for growth, especially for women. It is a tough atmosphere for younger employees also because a large time commitment (7-8 years) needs to be put in before you see any return. Certain workgroups have poor direct leadership with expectations not expressed. Many employees do not have passion for the company but work there because of the work/life balance. The focus on putting in the hours leads people to put requests on the backburner and a loss in productivity. Some management does not see dedication in people and does not see or acknowledge effort.

    Advice to Management

    Although having managers in positions for several years is great for creating a knowledge base, these same managers have not developed because they have gained comfort in their positions and the dynamic (good or bad) they have created. With the lawn and turf industry being very specific, more attention should be focused on promoting from within. Opportunities for job growth are already scarce within the company as is.
