Pros

Benefits are good. Bonuses used to be good, but they won't be for a long time, if they even give them next year... It looks good on a resume (it may get you a phone interview, but it won't get you a job). You can get decent experience learning about Toyota business practices (or at least learn how things should be there), and it's an ok place to learn about automotive manufacturing.

Cons

There is very little, if any, personal and professional growth for engineers there. One does NOT even need to be an engineer to be a competent or a great production or maintenance specialist, or even a QE specialist, and in most cases, an above average team leader or group leader could fill the role. It seems like you spend more time dealing with other people's personalities and egos than you do addressing/solving issues. Everyone has different agendas and priorities so there is no clear goals or focus, and therefore many issues don't get resolved, just swept under the rug for a while until they resurface. New ideas are not welcome. Hard work is not appreciated, nor is it rewarded. Departments are understaffed which leads to a horrible work life balance (during busy production periods I worked every saturday and sunday with no day off, on top of working 12-14 hours a day monday through friday). Pay is well below average for the industry (one could easily make 20-30% elsewhere), and raises don't even keep up with inflation. Hourly employees typically end up earning more money than salary, which is a running joke there, meaning you have maintenance and production team members making more money than group leaders and people with engineering degrees!

One of the worst parts about this place is that morale is very low, and employees show little if any respect for each other. It's bad enough if you're a Toyota employee, but if you're a contract, temporary, or non Toyota employee: zero respect. The turnover rate there is insane (>50%) and the number one reason cited for salaried employees leaving is respect issues. HR is worthless and they either don't understand or don't care to listen when employees have issues (it makes me wonder what they do all day). They're more interested in following their backwards policies, and decisions for them are black and white rather than judgements based on facts. Management should be aware of the situation at the plant, but nothing is being done to improve conditions. The quality of our final product is low, in part because, in practice, productivity is a higher priority than quality, and this is the worst of all NAMC's.

Advice to Management

Reward hard work and try new ideas because obviously what you're doing isn't working. Ask yourselves "why have so many people left TMMTX over the past 5 years?" RESPECT! RESPECT! RESPECT! Take the cap off of extended hours and comp time for salaried employees; people have lost out on so much pay because of this. Either that or make raises larger, salaries higher, just something... Make sure you are adequately staffed so people aren't giving up their lives for the company. Clarify priorities and make it known what the true focus should be. Foster an environment where people aren't so quick to try to get out of doing what needs to be done, but rather one where departments/groups are working together to solve issues, not blaming each other for why they exist...

    Pros

    Pay, insurance (health, dental, vision, all great), time off (gobs of time; I've only been here 4 years and I accrue more than I care to take off).

    Cons

    Dinosaurs abound at HQ. The place is chock full of people who have done the same type of job for +25 yrs and still cannot figure out an Excel formula. Logistics, and you don't know what A1-B1 means? Ok, not good...

    That's pretty much it. Great for the twilight years of your career, detrimental to anyone younger than 50. While your friends who work for Amazon are innovating and keeping pace with the times, you will get old, soft, and wrinkly (and thinking how great you are at the same time).

    Advice to Management

    Innovate! Push your employees to help mold the industrial landscape. Anyone over 20 years tenure, thanks, but give them the package and get some new, fresh, bright blood in there!
