Pros

Close to 40 hours/week. Good starting pay for Kansas City but only for Kansas City.

Cons

No opportunity for advancement. No opportunity to lead a team. Minimal learning opportunities. You can get paid the same or much more at other trading firms and actual software companies with significantly more upside (and decent health insurance). Much of senior management is just waiting to retire and doesn't care about mentoring or objective assessment come bonus season.

Advice to Management

Try to care.

I worked at Tradebot full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Usually reasonable hours. Chance to learn some new tech. Lots of Open Source. Some of the techies there are doing some interesting stuff. Pay might be a bit above others in KC. Many of your non-management co-workers will be talented and enjoyable to be around. The books are a little more open than typical, which is interesting. Look at this as a lengthy consulting engagement, and be working on your next job from day one.

    Cons

Hints of bonus windfalls will not pan out. Negotiate your salary accordingly. Salary and employment terms are better in the financial cities, so if you're open to moving, you'll do better elsewhere. Management social skills are minimal, and several seem not to get along with each other very well. Many good people move on pretty quickly. My favorite managers all left while I was there. Job stability is somewhat below average. In the big picture, the work itself is meaningless, compared to teaching or nursing.

    Advice to Management

Learn some compassion, because eventually the wheel will turn.
