I worked at Trader Joe's full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Co-workers and managers are usually very upbeat, creative types who hold down a job to pay the bills while they pursue artistic endeavors. Very gay-friendly.

Cons

The 80/20 rule: 80% of the work gets done by just 20% of the crew. Lots of dead weight and management is very hesitant to lay off due to "diversity" concerns.

Advice to Management

The job is "at will" so get rid of employees that don't measure up within the first 90 days.

I have been working at Trader Joe's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Down-to-earth, hard-working, pleasant staff and company as a whole.
Competitive starting pay for the industry.
Eligibility for solid benefits even on a part-time basis, including free gym membership.
    10% discount on groceries.
    Laid back work attire.
Store is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas day (often UNHEARD OF in retail).

    Cons

    The job can get repetitive.
Weekend and night hours. Not always compatible with a "regular" schedule.
As with any job, enjoyment can depend on the values of the Captain and Mates (store manager and assistant managers).

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work. As a fairly new employee, it's refreshing to work for a company that offers benefits to those who are not "full-timers."
I brag that my company compensates it's workers for work missed due to weather-related closings, offers Christmas bonuses to eligible employees who have worked 700+ hours for the company over the course of the year.
If you're a proactive employee interested in gaining the full experience of working for Trader Joe's, opportunities are there to take advantage of if you're willing to put in the time, energy, and effort.
Mr. Bane, please keep up the great work. It's clear that Trader Joe's cares just as much about employee morale as they do about profits and it's what keeps employee turnover relatively low. How often do you shop at a grocery store where the same employees have been there for several years?
Please keep up the great work and don't change. You're doing great things for your employees. I love working for your company. Thank you.
