I have been working at Trader Joe's part-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Competitive pay, health insurance for part time employees, paid vacations, somewhat flexible about schedules (unless you want to be a manager), generally interesting co-workers.

Cons

Food comes from all over the world but people still feel like its some hippy all natural good for you co op type of store; no profit sharing; no emphasis on organic or even healthy food- they have some but its all about what sells; incredibly crowded at any reasonable time to shop; wasteful over packaging, especially of produce, only 10% discount.

I worked at Trader Joe's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

TJ's usually hires fun, down-to-earth people, and I had a great time working amongst the other crew members. It's a laid back environment, and the culture of the company is very open-minded. They treat their employees really well, and they always promote from within, which is great.

    Cons

Starting wage is low, which is the main reason why I had to leave.

    Advice to Management

Please promote only managers with the proper people skills...

I have been working at Trader Joe's part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Co workers are friendly. Products superior. Customers mostly very nice. Great benefits. Great overall work experience. Best grocery specialty store overall!

    Cons

Many new hires get instant jump into management. That is great for them, however, tough for crew who have been there for a while with a desire to advance. Older people are less likely to become management. 20 to 30ish have best advantage. Hard work physically and injuries happen as in any physically demanding job.

    Advice to Management

While it is wise to employ those who are more likely to have the stamina for the long hours needed, the mentoring does not have the stability more time and experience lends.
