Former Employee - Project Manager in London, England (UK)
Disapproves of CEO

Pros

Good compensation and benefits package (includes 2 free Oyster cards all zones); Interesting projects that impact peoples lives in London; good work-life balance; good people to work with (on the whole);

Cons

Lack of professionalism, customer focus and urgency; too old school with people looking for stress free jobs for life and a lack of focus on delivery; departments very silo-ed especially the operational departments (e.g. London Buses, London Underground) - very protective and unwilling to adapt and improve; too much reliance on consultants to do the real work; senior management overpaid and unwilling to take decisions; too political as run by the Mayor who is elected every 4/5 years, makes it very hard to implement any large long term projects that would really make a difference (e.g. the current Mayor cancelled all the previous Mayor's projects mainly out of spite and to appear to be making cost-savings when in fact all of these projects were being funded by external funds and wouldn't have cost TfL (or the taxpayer) anything to deliver; too slow and bureaucratic.

Advice to Management

Make long term plans that are whats best for London and not just what the current Mayor wants. Make senior management more delivery focused and less scared to make important decisions. Find a way to get rid of poor performing staff and support those that do deliver and achieve instead of just those that are best at networking / brown-nosing with the right people!

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

Flexible working , development opportunities , free oyster card , final salary pension . The sheers size of TfL means that ine is able to move around and experience a wide variety of work .

    Cons

Rampant organisational changes, incompetent senior management , lack of promotion opportunities. Lack of mentoring and leadership within organisation. Poor employee performance measurement framework.

    Advice to Management

A stable streamlined organisational structure should be maintained without resorting to the almost annual organisational change programmes ,to ensure efficiency targets are delivered . A fairer system of measuring employee performance should be investigated.

    Pros

    Work life balance.
    Decent salary
30 days annual leave (more if you're old school)
    Final salary pension scheme.

    Cons

    Ineptitude is promoted.
Managers are only interested in their head counts rather than the benefit of the team and/or company.
Dealing with IM is a nightmare.

    Advice to Management

Get down to the real world.
Help people who want to work and deliver.
