I have been working at Travelers full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

There are good benefits including generous time off with pay, salary and incentive bonuses. Tuition reimbursement is also sometimes available depending on company discretion. The company has an excellent training facility and focuses efforts on training to produce quality results-driven employees.

Cons

This large company is almost strictly numbers driven. You will be expected to achieve certain
(challenging) results. This company lacks consideration for individual "soft qualities" and at times can feel a bit cold and hostile, especially during economic hardship when cost savings become a priority. Management works behind closed doors and the workers are rarely included in any master plans. As a salaried employee you may find yourself working significantly longer than average hours in order to reach set goals.

Advice to Management

Communicate, communicate, communicate.

    Pros

Fortune 500, great benefits (excluding pay - see cons); the company has a number of hard-working and talented employees from whom I have learned a lot.

    Cons

I suspect that pay is somewhat below market. It is a common belief that top executives really want to close the St. Paul offices and sell the buildings. Some people believe that a few years ago the company made a quiet effort to put the buildings on the market but found that there were no good offers.

    Advice to Management

If things stay the same then we will keep slowly losing IT resources in Minnesota as the IT job market continues to improve. It is discouraging to hear reports of strong profits while being told that there is little to no money available for salary for IT - and IT is a critical component of the company's continuing success.

  2. "Very, very corporate cultural where there are a lot of managers who love to look important but have no clue."

I worked at Travelers full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Above average industry benefits, stable company.

    Cons

Very corporate culture with several inexperienced mangers with no common sense and no people skills. If you think having an interview with 3 managers that takes 2 hrs for an auto appraiser position is ridiculous, then look elsewhere. You will be glad that you did not get hired in this company. Corporate Confusion to the max.!!! They have never heard of keep it simple stupid. Very, very inefficient company.

    Advice to Management

Get out of your ivory towers and start making changes ! Oh , yeah, that's right they did not teach you common sense in MBA school. They just taught you the six sigma approach to nowhere fast!! Keep on counting your beans and wigits, keep on micro managing and see where that gets your company. Just a workforce afraid to have an opinion, no morale, no enthusiasm, just going thru the motions...til the A players find greener pastures.
