I have been working at Travelers full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Erm... It is ok finding a parking space at the office and, erm.... the sandwich company that does the rounds each day sells hot soup!

Cons

Joined the company when it was The St Paul in the early 2000s, at which point there was an atmosphere of creativity, encouragement and above all empowerment. Employees efforts and results were rewarded and appreciated. Along comes Travelers and.. oh dear.. Talk about dragging a once proud and great company through the muck. An underwriting unit can make as much money as you like and any excuse will be used not to reward.. Creativity is stifled due to extreme internal bureaucracy (officially termed 'collaboration'), a blame culture is well and truly present with the burgeoning and bloated management structure covering their backs 24/7. Oh, did I mention the insufferable management buzz-words and phrases bandied around the place with soviet style hypocricy such as 'leveraging our talent advantage', 'reaching out to us' and of course 'collaborative approach'. This is even before I have began to start on the recent and disasterous reorganisation. Oh dear.

Advice to Management

Talk to your employees on a plain and simple level and lets make the company what it once was.

    Cons

Very conservative at times but it serves them well in the long term

I worked at Travelers full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Probably a good place to start out, but wouldn't advise staying long-term. If you're right out of school or new to the business, could be a good place to get accustomed to the business. People are generally very nice and helpful.

    Cons

High volume, automation means you don't know what is coming in. Little attention to detail--accounts are valued on volume rather than applying sound underwriting. Reactionary environment. You can tell that Hartford is distant, not in touch with local markets. They don't trust their local people to use their judgement/experience, probably because they don't ever provide real uw training. Systems are antiquated and the managers seem to think systems can provide better uw alone, without individual attention.
