I worked at Travelers full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Underwriting software is adequate, allowing underwriters to price accounts quickly, allowing them to focus on selling and negotiating.
"Learning Travelers" can be done within a year on the job (not the case with other insurance companies).
"Getting things done" is very practical if you are organized, have a positive attitude and want to work. Not a lot of red tape. Management and company want to get things done.
Procedures, documenation and processes are very clear and practical, facilitating speed and productivity. (again, not the same at other insurance companies).
Benefits: Roth 401(K); Pension;
Company is respected and has pricing power. Doesn't mean you'll write all accounts. And you need to be able to sell and negotiate. But price does matter in insurance business, and anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.
CEO has 10+ years of insurance experience, has done a good job, is respected on Wall Street.
Large company, with opportunities for advancement, especially if you are mobile.
Financially stable company (part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average).
Diverse businesses: Technology insurance (one of the best in the industry); international;
Senior management is pretty good. Many of the senior officers in home office, and at the departmental level, have been there for a long time. Many technically competent professionals there.
Lots of opportunities to learn.

Cons

Cons are minor all things being equal.

Salary is adequate, but could be better.
401(K) match is lump sum at end of year. Of course, at least they still have a company match.

Advice to Management

Pay a little better. Also: Invest some more money in underwriting software, pipelining software for tracking prospects, could further increase productivity of underwriters.

    I worked at Travelers full-time

    Pros

    Great Benefits / Salary is at upper end for most all adjusting jobs. Probably 1 of 2 best paying companies for adjusters. However, no raises or bonus (even after several years of employment) unless you are top performer.

    Cons

    Upper MGMT has no respect for employees and has look down their nose attitude. / No raises, bonus, or compensation of any kind at year end unless you are a top performer (5 people out of a group of 50) / no appreciation for long hours / heavy burden placed on a few adjusters in a department and there is no compensation, respect, or additional pay for those that this falls on.

    There is some room to move around but mgmt usually knows who they will put in the spot when it's posted. This is a company where brown nosing goes a long way!

    Work environment is almost prison like. It is frowned upon to talk with your coworkers or be away from your cube for more than a minute at a time.

    The list goes on- this is a great place if you desire to come in, sit in a cube, run as hard as you can everyday, and go home.

    Very much don't ask for anything or complain / Their attitude is you have a job and we can replace you.

    Advice to Management

    How about weeding out some of the unit managers that obviously have no people skills or skills in developing their employees. Culture needs to change- I would start with upper mgmt.

    I have been working at Travelers full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    30,000 employees, frugal, everyone I have met is busy and sharp and trying to gain an edge.

    Cons

    Normal new job frustrations, of geting to know where to find what, and which rule applies to an application.

    Advice to Management

    None.
