"Atmosphere very dependent on department"

Former Employee - Research Fellow in Dublin, Co. Dublin (Ireland)

I worked at Trinity College Dublin full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Situation in the heart of Dublin city is a big plus. Not too bureaucratic, especially if you are a good researcher you can step back from that as much as you wish.

Cons

The budget has been squeezed very hard. Unfortunately a large part of the cost base is attached to hte more senior staff whose salaries are protected, so junior staff bear the brunt.

Advice to Management

Short sighted cost cutting is a risky strategy.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Trinity College Dublin part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I gained experience when I was working towards my doctorate in teaching and in the year immediately following. Because I was already known to my colleagues I had lots of support within my department, and I had students who wanted to be there.

    Cons

As in most universities, the paperwork required to get paid in a timely manner was outdated and an obstacle. Better attendance by supervisors in lectures would give credence to the class as well.

    Advice to Management

Treat your adjuncts kindly in this tough economic climate. It seems we're here to stay until the economy recovers.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Trinity College Dublin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My fellowship (EMPOWER) is very good and gives you complete freedom to pursue an independent research program

    Cons

Ireland is not doing great because of the crisis. Funding for science has been cut a lot. There is little hope to get a permanent position
