Pros

Flexible when it comes to perks (but not salary, see Cons). Interesting product that lends itself to all kinds of interesting experiences across the technical stack. Good work-life balance (not the case in all departments, however). The 'benefits' are great if you don't mind trading large chunks of compensation for snacks, but I'll leave those for people that actually prefer glass walls with their zoo (I'm looking at you).

Cons

The first red flag was the pay; $45k salary for a "QA Engineer" which had previously been pulling six figures doing webdev working remotely, but that's okay, because I made sure to clarify that I would be seeking more competitive pay after having proven myself before accepting the position. Ha, how naive; context doesn't matter to bullies. After two employee reviews, both being rated top marks "IX supreme being" in every category, pay negotiations with managers finally came to an agreement on a number, only to have it shot down by the CEO: "try again 9 months later, at which point your number seems reasonable".... this is after having been delayed in every way possible by the middle-managers for months, on top of others bragging about their hazing period at the infancy of the company. I went through my hazing period as well, at the BEGINNING of my decade old career. A day later, I get locked out of my iX accounts with the explanation that they thought I was quitting, so I guess I was fired since they misjudged that situation. Clarifying made little difference to the situation. So if you like working for dishonest, vindictive employers that use the passion of their employees to in turn under pay them: this is your stop. Despite that, it was still worth the experience in my situation (+1), since I kind of knew what I was getting into. The development process was enjoyable enough despite management (chalked up to some oddly placed trust and lack of micro-management; oddly because they'll still stab you in the back), which I imagine is why so many talented people have decided to put up with so little in return. The relaxed pace is great for a breather, but long-term careers would be better served somewhere that management doesn't see you as purchased property once you've taken the position. Let's not even get started on the nepotism.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We take all feedback to heart, both positive and negative, and are sorry to hear that your experience at iXsystems didn’t match up to the environment we strive so hard to foster at our company. We do want to point out that typically new hires are started on a one year contract, and I believe this would have been the case here. We generally re-evaluate compensation at the end of the one year term, and are more than happy to re-negotiate salary at that point. We wish things had worked out better and are glad to hear that you did have some positive experiences during your time at iXsystems. We wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors. Pros

Good benefits package, hybrid work arrangement, and genuine scheduling flexibility day-to-day. The breakroom and physical work environment are well-maintained and comfortable. The work itself is genuinely interesting; if you care about open source storage infrastructure, you will find the problems meaningful. The people on the ground are a real highlight: collaborative, knowledgeable, and easy to work with.

Cons

Onboarding is largely unstructured. Expect to figure things out yourself and hope the right people are willing to answer questions. Your early trajectory depends heavily on who you happen to sit near. Performance reviews feel sporadic and lack meaningful substance, and promotion paths are equally opaque. It is difficult to gauge where you stand or what advancement actually looks like. Management rarely provides concrete goals for features or tasks, and the company roadmap often feels undefined or subject to change without much communication. Leadership can feel disconnected from the realities of day-to-day engineering work. Remote employees outside of California should be prepared to work into their midday hours regularly, as meetings are often scheduled without consideration for non-Pacific time zones. The layoffs were handled abruptly and with little transparency. Given the unclear direction the company had been operating under, it was not entirely surprising, but the execution could have been handled better. Lastly a heavy and abrupt push toward AI integration created confusion around product direction and left many existing features and customer commitments feeling deprioritized
