Pros

You get to see a lot of interesting businesses/buildings. The company is really a leader in its field as you will not find a superior fire safety product out there. The management really seems to care about its employees (most of the time).

Cons

While the company gives you vehicles to use, up to one hour of travel each way is not compensated. If your job location is far from the office expect an 11 hour day while only being paid for 8 hours. The dispatching system isn't the most organized and can cause customers to already be upset upon arrival.

Advice to Management

Give new inspectors better standardized training instead of on the field observation. If you're with an inspector who doesn't know what he's doing you're going to learn how to do things the incorrect way.

    Pros

Diverse group of people, interesting product lines.

    Cons

Promotions do not seem merit based

    Advice to Management

Look at the qaulity of work as the determining factor for salary and promotions. While being able to maneuver politically is fine quality of work should take the top spot.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

It's a job, which, is better than not having one.

    Cons

Seems that some are favored over others based on how well you can hang out with the management or how pretty you might be, or cool. Based on previous management promotions, most all persons promoted lack the skills to do the job promoted too. Even when this is discovered, it takes way to long for the problem to be remedied. Another problem is the pawning off of duties. More and more sales persons at SimplexGrinnell are expected to cover the tasks of designer, and project manager while keeping the numbers high. This leads to much time spent working on parts ordering, scheduling, tracking down infomation, work that a project manager needs to do and gets paid well to do.
