I have been working at U.S. Bank full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Convivial work atmosphere
    Frequent opportunities for casual dress
    Hire from within when possible
Offers paid volunteer days (2 after 5 yrs)
    Emphasis on going green
    Good work/life balance
Can buy an extra week of vacation
Has a good reputation as an ethical financial institution

    Cons

Salary compression for longer term employees
Bonuses aren't transparent - no guidelines on how to earn one or increase it - can seem random
Stock options not offered to most employees
Awards are capricious - more luck (right spot, right time, right manager) than anything
Strongly discouraged from using sick time and can't use vacation days instead
Going out on maternity leave can interfere with raises and bonuses - gender equity problems

    Advice to Management

Better pay leads to happier more productive employees. You should take a lesson from Costco or Trader Joe's business models. Employees are an investment in the satisfaction of your clients, not a cost to keep as low as possible.

Short-term profit doesn't equate to long-term success. So think beyond the next quarter and act as if your employees are just as important as your shareholders.

Make bonuses and how to achieve them apparent to everyone.

Take a hard look at your pay across gender and for equity issues caused by length of service.
