I have been working at UC Irvine Health full-time (More than a year)

Pros

I love the staff here. Most units get along with each other and help each other out. Teamwork is huge here, and we always are offering to help. There are many learning opportunities because this is a level one trauma center, especially in SICU. But for the most part, its a friendly environment with many resources.

Cons

The pay is low, but fairly competitive than hospitals around the area. There are politics and drama, but that's like any other job, especially in the hospital. Parking also is a pain because you pay 40 dollars for parking, which is 2 blocks away. A shuttle takes you, but sometimes you would have to wait 30 minutes just to get picked up from the shuttle.

Advice to Management

Depends on your unit manager, but some micromanage, but some don't. Just hope you are not in a unit that is micromanaged by your manager.

I worked at UC Irvine Health part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Very inviting atomosphere/people
    -Diverse environment
    -Free Snacks
    -Ability to interact with patients
    -Flexible hours
-May allow insight to explicit medical procedures (ask placement person to get you in the right direction if you are interested in a medical career, because they might place you in an area where you have a lot more interaction with doctors and other professionals)

    Cons

    -Gets boring at times
-Feels like it's only for future medical students
-It's hard to meet other volunteers

    Advice to Management

Try to get volunteers to bond/get to know each other more...might make it more rewarding!

I have been working at UC Irvine Health full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

flexible scheduling, no more than 4 days on at a time, 8 hrs overtime available per week, lots of learning (new residents), full benefits while part time

    Cons

difficult to switch between part time and full time, many nurses speak Tagalog on the floor or during shift report, experienced nurses not always welcoming to new nurses, double charting (electronically and paper charting for now), parking is expensive, lots of fees/dues taken out of pay check each month

    Advice to Management

make it easier for us to obtain higher education
