I have been working at UC San Diego full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

UCSD is very diverse from culture to professional background. There is a lot of great science happening all around us. There is a true intent to build community and pride.

    Cons

In the two clinical trial groups I have worked, the academic/science pursuit is so strong, such that SOPs are seen as marginal guidelines and their maintenance too much of an effort. People just know what to do in their heads because attrition is very low. So sometimes, problem solving becomes stale because there are no new ideas. For personnel paid on grant money, grants may not get renewed and one would need to look for a new job. People can get pigeon-holed accordinging to previous jobs. HR does not see tranferable skills. The key is to include the keywords from the job description into the resume.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your fund managers when they say there is little money to do 'x', 'y' and 'z.' Be willing to try new ways of solving a problem even if it's coming from "industry."
