I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Great benefits, flexible schedule including telecommute options. Lots of opportunities to continue training and personal development, if you can find a way to carve out time to take advantage of these offerings.

Cons

Tends to have unclear promotion structure for administrative roles, and somewhat flat salaries. Currently understaffed in many areas, which has had an impact on overall moral.

Advice to Management

Find ways to recognize what staff are doing well - positive culture can do a lot towards making up for being overworked etc.

I worked at UC San Francisco full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

UCSF has an excellent reputation and there are some wonderful people who work here.

    Cons

The pay for most does not take into account the cost of living in San Francisco.

The PIs are not trained, or encourage to train, as managers so their people skills are almost non-existent. They offer little or no career development advice, instead they are paranoid about getting funding. Staff in the labs have no way to voice concerns, as their success is coupled to that of their PIs.

HR is slow and often ineffective. Operational excellent has severely damaged the personal touch of UCSF.

Too many reports of bullying, sexual harassment, racism, homophobia for a progressive institution. PIs seem to be able to bully etc without fear of repercussion. The "little man" takes all of the blame. Senior PIs bully their way out of complying with university policy.

    Advice to Management

Train your PIs and have their training rated by their staff and observed for at least 3 years after appointment. Have all postdocs and graduate students offered tutors not in the same department as the PI to offer advice and moral support.
