I worked at UC San Francisco full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Benefits are good and at least in my case the work/life balance was solid; the majority of your co-workers will be great. Amazing research and innovation in the life sciences.

Cons

A huge organization which is not very agile; it takes tremendous effort to move anything forward. Inevitable politics and egos. A sizeable number of middle managers could be let go and it would not be noticed - plus the $$ saved would be considerable. Little to no training for administrative staff.

Advice to Management

Interim Chancellor Hawgood is certainly up to the task of being Chancellor, although a search is on to find the successor to Susan Desmond-Hellmann. That search will take months, as the target candidate pool is probably not a large one, and allegedly there should be some sort of sizzle factor to the choice.

I worked at UC San Francisco full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very smart people to work with. The opportunity to feel really good about the effect of your work. It's easy to believe in the mission of advancing health.

    Cons

Salary remains pretty stagnant after hire. Negotiate your starting wage well. Doctors tend to manage their groups and doctors are not trained in management. Although great people work there, they are not celebrated and there is little attention, time or resources devoted to growing talent within the organization (at the staff level).

    Advice to Management

Remember that all people have potential and nurture it to maximize the return on your investment. Devote more time to training in the beginning and find ways for employees to spearhead projects that are of interest to them. Also, if some employees do not perform, you must manage them to correct this, don't just push the work on to the most productive member of your team.
