I have been working at UC San Francisco

    Pros

The Helen Diller Cancer Center at Mission Bay has dozens of excellent labs, all thematically organized around cancer. The building also hosts excellent seminar speakers during the fall/winter/spring. It's easy to collaborate, learn a technique, or borrow supplies from your colleagues.

    Cons

Like the other UC campuses, UCSF doesn't have a lot of money. The core facilities in particular seem underfunded compared to Stanford. There is also a lot of bureaucratic red tape that slows things down any time you want to do something, like hire a tech or apply for a grant. Postdocs are paid the NIH minimum salary, but that's not much compared to the cost of living in SF.
