I have been working at UC Santa Cruz part-time (More than a year)

Pros

engineering department helps fund most students through grants, research positions, and teaching assistant positions. I haven't had to pay any tuition as a masters student. and get free health insureance through the university. Great professors and opportunity to work on progressive research projects. good connections with companies in silicon valley (just over the hill).

Cons

Some required classes dont relate to my research. putting in a lot of hours with classes, research, and teahing.

I have been working at UC Santa Cruz full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

True work-life balance, great mission, great benefits including a pension. Great place to work if you live in Santa Cruz.

    Cons

Little accountability, staff don't have huge incentive to work hard or be innovative. Very risk-averse culture in general. Difficult to get a raise.

    Advice to Management

If UC can't pay well, at least try to make work enjoyable. Work would be much more meaningful if upper management communicated a compelling vision.

I have been working at UC Santa Cruz full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are very good (health insurance are offered with many choices at very competitive rates), and the environment is beautiful (views of ocean, trees, and outdoor life).

    Cons

Not much gets done with lots of red tape.....it's all about cuts, and reducing the work force (everyone is doing more than one job....)
