Pros
- Lots of options for laboratory work - Pay is decent and you can support yourself while in school - You have the opportunity to work with cutting edge research in interesting fields you can only access in school - Gives you a resume boost when applying to grad school Getting a good PI will allow you to flourish in your role while not being bogged down while doing schoolwork, so do your research and ask around before choosing a PI. I got lucky here, and my first lab was a great experience.
Cons
- Your experience is heavily dependent on your PI and lab-mates - Some labs will ask you to put the lab-work before your school work - Lab work can be hard in general, so this isn't something you should consider if you just want to make money
